Agra Fort
As I stepped into Agra Fort, I felt like I was walking through the pages of Mughal history. This massive red sandstone fortress, just 2.5 kilometers from the Taj Mahal, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was once the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal Dynasty. Wandering through its palaces, halls, and mosques, I could almost hear the echoes of royal footsteps and courtly discussions. The view of the Taj Mahal from the fort’s ramparts gave me goosebumps.

Mehtab Bagh
Visiting Mehtab Bagh was like discovering a secret spot tailor-made for photographers and romantics. Located just across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal, this serene garden offers a perfect, unobstructed view of the monument, especially magical at sunset. As I strolled through its paths, away from the usual crowds, I felt a sense of calm. The symmetry and alignment with the Taj made it clear—this garden was part of the original vision of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.

Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah
They call it the “Baby Taj,” and as soon as I laid eyes on the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, I could see why. This exquisite marble mausoleum predates the Taj Mahal and seems almost like a prototype of its grander cousin. Set in a peaceful garden, the delicate carvings and inlay work fascinated me. It was a quieter experience compared to the Taj, but no less beautiful. I loved how intimate and detailed everything felt—like discovering a hidden gem of Mughal artistry.

Fatehpur Sikri
Though it’s a little farther out—about 40 kilometers from Agra—my trip to Fatehpur Sikri was like stepping into a ghost city frozen in time. Once the capital of the Mughal Empire, this abandoned city is stunning in its scale and design. Walking through its courtyards and palaces, I felt both awe and a sense of mystery. The Buland Darwaza (Gate of Magnificence) towered above me, and I couldn’t help but marvel at the grandeur the Mughals once lived with. It’s a must-visit for anyone wanting the full story of Mughal glory.
